Designing a Ergonomic Workstation

To design a friendly work station for the users, it is important to keep in mind for the work environment also. The components used are sometimes difficult.

THE CHAIR

Ergonomically, chair is the most important piece of office equipment. "Low back pain relics the most common and expensive work-related musculoskeletal disorder," it is saying of a leading health insurer. Low back pain can be through the result of sitting for days, months and years in feebly adjusted chairs. The typical office worker will use more time sitting in an office chair than anywhere else, with the probable exception of bed. With all this time spent together, it is dangerous that chore chairs meet these human criteria.

Task chairs should give confidence for movement. Regular movement and position changes are dangerous to health and comfort. However, in order to find people moving, they have to first recognize how to control their chairs. And this is easier to say than done. According to a study in 1995, less than 2% of the subjects were able to classify the purpose of the back anxiety adjustment most basic of chair controls--on a variety of chairs. The problem is that if the tension spring is set too firm, the chair won not recline and the consumer will be compulsory to sit in an upright posture. If the spring of the chair is too loose, the chair will fall back to in most reclined position, where the user may sit for hours at a time. Even if set correctly, the tension spring will only give optimal support in the middle of the recline range.

RECLINE IS HEALTHY

These days, researchers all over agree that reclining is healthy. The renowned industrial designer Niels Diffient once said, "The more you recline, the more comfortable you get. Ergo, the best chair is a bed." Essentially, the more work you can do while reclining; the more of your body weight will be scattered to the backrest of your chair, and the less force your spine will have to endure. But, extended recline can put extra strain on your neck and shoulders while they work to preserve the upright position of the head. Therefore, it is wise to believe a chair with a headrest if you wait for to perform wide work in a reclining position.

Task chairs should be in shape to use. In addition to correct support, it is vital that a task chair give good body fit. No one would believe wearing a pair of shoes that did not fit.

SEAT DEPTH

Here the main concern is to give maximum surface area on which to allocate the body weight, while keeping the weak area inside the knee clear of potential contact stress from the face of the seat. While sitting with your back properly supported, there should be approximately 2 - 4 inches of space between the front of the seat cushion and the inside of the knee.

BACKREST HEIGHT

Like seat depth, the idea of flexible backrests is to make best use of surface contact and minimize weight on points. While bending of the spine varies somewhat from person to person, it is the position of the curvature that matters.
